‘Stewards tampered with outcome of title race’

Michael Schumacher’s boss Luca Montezemolo has slammed the Monaco race stewards claiming that they tampered with the outcome of this year’s World Championship when they penalised the German following Saturday’s qualifying.

Schumacher was sent from P1 to P22 on the grid for the Monte Carlo street race after the stewards ruled that he had deliberately impeded Fernando Alonso during qualifying by stalling his car on the track.

And although the stewards claim that the evidence suggests that Schumacher’s mishap was not a mistake, one steward, Joaquin Verdegay, recently conceded that they “don’t know for sure if the entire manoeuvre was deliberate.”

His statements have angered Ferrari President Montzemolo, who told the Gazzetta Dello Sport newspaper that “regardless of the type of justice, either sporting or otherwise, I don’t like a guilty verdict that is based on presumptions.”

He also accused the stewards of tampering with this year’s race for the Championship. “I especially do not like the fact that with a verdict such as this one, it can heavily influence the outcome of the World Championship,” he fumed.
